"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matt. 5:3
Who are these "poor in spirit" that will inherit the kingdom of heaven? Charles Finney, the Oberlin Evangelist, from the mid 1800's, states that "these are those that have a realizing sense of our spiritual state. In this it is implied that we understand our own guilt and helplessness, and realize as a practical fact our own utter emptiness by nature of every thing good, and of any tendency to that which is good."
The person that is "poor in spirit" realizes their utter need for and dependency on God. This dependency goes beyond just words but is met out in the actions of the humble heart. The New Living Translation states it as, "God blesses those who realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them."
We ended the service with a beautiful time of communion and singing the song The Heart of Worship:
King of endless worth
No one could express
How much You deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath
I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
And it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
May you be blessed this week as you realize your dependence on the all sufficient, gracious and loving God!! Jesus, it is all about you!!
